Who we are

Food Sovereignty Ghana (FSG) is a grassroots Movement dedicated to protecting Ghana’s right to control her own food systems. We advocate for food sovereignty over food security to ensure that local farmers and communities, not multinational companies have power and control over our agricultural resources.

In the words of our Founder, Ali-Masmadi Jehu-Appiah:

“…At Food Sovereignty Ghana, our number one mission is to switch the language from Food security to Food sovereignty as the end goal! …“Food sovereignty” is not the same as “food security”. A country can have food security through food imports. However dependence on food imports is precarious and makes a country prone to multiple risks – price risks, supply risks, conditionality risks (policy conditions that come with food imports).

Food sovereignty, on the other hand, implies ensuring domestic production, supply and distribution of food. It means that the nationals of the country…must primarily be responsible for ensuring that the nation…[is] first and foremost dependent on their own efforts and resources to grow their basic foods…” (20th May 2014)

Our Mission

Whilst striving for food sovereignty, at FSG, we also fight for sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and avoidance of harmful policies that threaten Ghana’s food systems. We passionately oppose GMOs and policies that undermine smallholder farmers, disrupt ecosystems and increase reliance on imported food.

Why food sovereignty matters

For decades, international policies have weakened Africa’s agricultural self-sufficiency. By prioritising food sovereignty, we aim to restore our control over food production, ensuring that Ghana’s food supply is resilient, sustainable and free from external manipulation and threats.
